Blood-Brain Barrier Proteins
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a highly selective membrane barrier between the blood and the interstitium of the brain. Malfunction caused by external damage, systemic inflammation, infections, stroke, neurodegenerative or autoimmune diseases may serve as gateway for inflammatory mediators, toxins and pathogens. The permeability of the BBB can be assessed by several biomarkers.
