Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS, bNOS) is found in neurons of the central and peripheral nervous system, macula densa, and pancreatic islet cells. An alternative splice variant of nNos is specifically expressed in striated muscle. nNOS is soluble and predominantly found in the cytosol. It produces nitric oxide (NO), a messenger molecule with diverse functions and neurotransmitter like properties.
